Melton R. Young Bird Hamilton

December 2, 1945 ~ February 20, 2024 (age 78) 78 Years Old


Melton R. Young Bird Hamilton’s life began on December 2, 1945 in Lawton, Oklahoma; the son of Edward Young Bird and Emma Belle (Tah) Hamilton. Melton loved education and research. He was deeply involved in researching his Native heritage and earned several bachelor degrees in History and Anthropology. Melton enjoyed working as a intern, curator and museum director for the Mid America All Indian Center of Wichita and was an avid Native American Historian. Melton was united in marriage to Lisa Long. Together, they enjoyed attending Native events and powwows. Melton was a Traditional Dancer and a proud descendant of Chiefs Black Kettle, Campos and Set’tainte. Melton’s family includes his wife, Lisa of Towanda and several grandchildren. He passed away on February 20, 2024 in Wichita, a kind soul who was loved dearly and will be missed greatly. He is preceded in death by his children, Dalton Hamilton and Tanya Hamilton. Graveside services will take place on Monday, February 26, at 2pm at McGill Cemetery in Potwin, KS.
