Donald "Don" R. May

December 28, 1939 ~ February 24, 2024 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Donald Raymond May was born in Winfield, Kansas, on December 28th, 1939, and lived on his family’s farm until they moved to Conway Springs where he grew up. Don went to barbering school after being honorably discharged from active duty in 1962 having served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis.
Don married Karen Schauf at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Wichita, KS in 1963. They moved to Lawrence, KS for a year, followed by Mulvane, KS. Don and Karen ultimately settled in El Dorado, KS in 1965 where they raised a family, built a business, and were active members of St. John’s Catholic Church community. It was rare to see Don and Karen apart, having spent nearly 61 devoted and loving years together.

Don barbered for nearly 40 years from 1962 to 2002. Before he retired, he successfully built and operated West Central Barber Shop as sole proprietor. During these years Don perfected the ability to tell a story and make friends. There were no strangers in or out of the Barber shop.
Don was dedicated to his faith, evident though strong devotion to daily Mass, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Consecration to our Lady, and the Rosary. Don was also a member of the Knights of Columbus at St John’s.

Don loved his family and engaging in activities with them, he especially loved to tease and play with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cantaloupe was one of his favorite things to grow in his garden. Don also enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, farming, cutting firewood, and tinkering in the ‘shed’.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Ceclia (Ebenkamp) May, brothers; Bob, Jim, and Richard May, daughter Kelly Marie May, granddaughter Lucia May, and great grandchildren; John Michael O’Brien, Nathan Parton, Nash Everett May, and Benedicta Marie Loeffelholz.
