Pete Scanlon

June 5, 1955 ~ March 3, 2024 (age 68) 68 Years Old

Tribute

Peter Damian Scanlon, 68, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 3, 2024. Pete fought courageously during his four month hospitalization but ultimately succumbed to complications following surgery to treat a medical emergency. He never complained and he retained his sense of humor to the end. Pete was born in Liberal, Kansas on June 5, 1955. He is predeceased by his father, Robert Emmett Scanlon, and his mother, Betty Jean (Maxwell) Scanlon. As an Air Force brat in his younger years, Pete lived in many different states and abroad. He graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Germany in 1973. Upon relocating to the US, the family returned to El Dorado, Kansas where his parents were raised. Pete inherited his father’s entrepreneurial mindset and ran his own company, Fairway Construction, for many years. He was successful due to his strong work ethic and his ability to lead a crew of characters. Pete was also a master craftsman and a savvy businessman. Many homes in Eldorado were framed by Pete’s company and are recognizable by his signature diamond trademark on the gables. All his life, Pete was a friend to dogs and was a caring and loving owner. He rescued many and provided a paradise for his dogs at his home, including Jackie, Juda and Jessie to name a few. His dog, sweet funny Ozzie, was at Pete’s side his last day. Pete was a quiet guy who mostly listened but was always ready with a snappy comeback. He came across as tough at times but he had a kind and generous heart and remained open to giving those less fortunate a second chance when others would or could not. Pete enjoyed his solitude and delighted in the natural habitat of his property along the Walnut River but was always up for the many family milestones celebrated there. Most importantly Pete made a good life for himself and was significant in the lives of those who loved him. Pete is survived by his siblings, Pam Scanlon (Tom Nesmith), Chris Scanlon ( Becky), Sheryl Howerton (Mike), and John Scanlon (Renee), three nieces Lindsey Campos, Alison Stramel and Sydney Scanlon and four nephews Luke Scanlon, Tyler Nesmith, Andrew Howerton and Connor Scanlon. The family thanks all of Pete’s doctors, most notably Dr. Brandon Reed and Dr. Daniel Morgan. Their empathy, compassion and care for Pete as he faced his medical challenges and end of life choices was extraordinary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kansas Humane Society. A celebration to honor Pete’s life will be held at a later date.
